A shared to-do list for couples (that doesn’t feel like work)

A shared to-do list sounds simple. In practice, many couples try one and drop it within a week: it’s one more app to remember, or it starts to feel like a list of orders.

Here’s how to make one that both of you actually use.

Keep yours and ours separate

Not everything needs to be shared. Keep personal things on your own list, and put things that affect both of you on a shared one. You both stay in control of what you show.

Sort by when, not by priority scores

Three buckets are enough for most couples: Today, This week and Later. Add a date only when there’s a real deadline, like an RSVP.

What to put on it

  • Home: repairs, cleaning jobs, things to buy.
  • Admin: bills, renewals, appointments to book, forms to send.
  • Plans: trips, gifts, birthdays, events and RSVPs.
  • Shopping: a grocery list you can both add to.
  • Goals: something you’re saving up for together.

Keep it calm

  • Nobody assigns; either of you can pick something up.
  • Talk about a task on the task, not in a long text thread.
  • Let gentle reminders do the reminding.
  • Say thanks when things get done.
