A shared grocery list for couples

“Do we need anything?” “I think we’re out of…” “Did you already get eggs?” A grocery list is the most shared to-do there is, and it’s usually scattered across notes and texts.

One list, both of you add to it

The simplest fix is one list that lives in one place. Whoever notices something running low adds it right then, and whoever goes to the store has the whole list.

Sort it by store section

A list sorted into produce, dairy, bakery and so on means less walking back and forth. Quantities (“2 lb chicken”, “x3”) save a text from the aisle.

Tick as you go

Ticking items in the store means your partner can see what’s already in the cart, so nobody buys the same thing twice.

Keep the questions on the list

“Which brand?” and “is this the right one?” are easier as a comment on the list than a text that gets lost between other messages.

Plan the week in five minutes

  • Pick a few meals together and add what they need.
  • Check the fridge and cupboards, and add what’s running low.
  • Keep one list for the weekly shop and another for one-off trips, like a party or a new home.
  • Start a fresh list each week, so the old one doesn’t fill up with things you already have.
